Dental hygiene assistants should have good interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to work well with others. They should also be able to multitask, pay attention to detail, and use practice management software. A dental hygiene assistant’s job duties may include: Assisting hygienist with oral examinations, cleaning teeth, and providing fluoride treatments. Coronal polishing and flossing. Placing sealants as needed. Setting up and breaking down treatment rooms. Sterilizing/disinfecting rooms, equipment, and instruments as needed. Taking patient xrays. Verifying patient medical history, charting observations, and understanding insurance benefits. Scheduling appointments, answering phones, and ordering supplies as needed.
