Dental Hygienist – Clinical Infection Control Coordination Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Provides dental care to patients (pre-school age to geriatric) within a dental clinic. Assesses patientsxe2x80x99 general dental condition and care needs. Conducts oral cancer screening exams and x-rays. Offers practical suggestions to patients to ensure proper oral hygiene. Performs routine oral hygiene maintenance procedures and applications for damage prevention. Works with staff to sterilize dental instruments and equipment. Collaborates with clinical team to evaluate patient medical chart information as it relates to the dental/medical integration model. Documents updated patient data on EMR system related to dental procedures. Enters patient health data into the electronic medical records system (EMR) database. Utilizes time management skills and a proactive approach to incorporate and communicate an integrated team (medical/dental) approach to promote the oral health of pre-school, school aged children, their families, and OB patients within a medical clinic. Provides oral health screenings, fluoride treatment, sealants, and dental referrals within medical clinics and community outreach locations. Coordinates and provides educational materials to the public and community partners Determine appropriate dental service referrals, monitor services received and results. Functions with autonomy as the sole dental provider within a multi functional health care team in performing comprehensive health care activities focused on: Providing oral health education and proactive treatment (fluoride, sealants, cavity screenings) Working with the team in creating and maintaining collaborative relationships with community partners that contribute to the development of a strong service delivery network Dental Infection Control Coordination: Responsible for coordinating departmental infection prevention program. Develop and maintain written infection prevention policies and procedures appropriate for the services provided by the facility and based on evidence-based guidelines, regulations, or standards. Coordinate annual dental OSHA training as required by state statute and maintain training records according to state and federal requirements. Participate in organizational Infection Control Committee and collaborate with other members of the committee to draft, review, and approve various policies, procedures, and protocols related to infection control. Qualifications Knowledge, skill and ability: Ability to interact positively and build rapport with patients, coworkers and/or external contacts. Knowledge and skill to provide preventative services and treatment to include: Ability to promote oral health education Tobacco cessation Dietary counseling Fluoride application Sealant applications Coronal polishing Child/Adult Prophylactic treatment Scaling and Root Plan (SRPs) Temporize emergent dental cavities in preparation for restorative care by the dentist Knowledge and skills required to collect diagnostic data: Medical and dental histories Dental health screening and assessment via: Visual inspection of oral cavity for carious lesions (cavities) and other hard tissue anomalies Visual soft tissue inspection Dental probing and charting Radiographs Vital signs Education or Formal Training: Certification and licensure as a dental hygienist from an accredited dental school program. Previous experience in infection control in dental setting preferred but not required. Experience: Previous experience working as a dental hygienist in a clinical setting is preferred. Previous experience in infection control coordination in a dental setting preferred. Material and equipment directly used: General dental instruments and equipment, x-ray technology, computer, printer, multi-line telephone systems, fax machine, copy machine, and all Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Excel and the internet. Working environment/physical activities: Office environment within a clinical setting. Enters data into computer programs via use of EMR database system, mouse and keyboard. Moves about the office environment and occasionally to other locations. Moves/transports objects up to 25 lbs occasionally. Communicates information to others. Discerns/analyzes information from others to assist in decision making.
