BASIC FUNCTION Under the direction of the Healthcare Providers and Organizational Protocols, the position of Dental Assistant (RDA/DA) provides direct patient care along with clinical and administrative assistance to the healthcare provider(s), ensuring smooth patient flow and efficient clinical operations. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 1) Clinical Responsibilities: a. Obtain dental and relevant medical history from patients and record vital signs as supervised by the Dentist(s) b. Accurate documentation of services provided c. Prepare patients for examinations, assist with dental procedures and treatments d. Prepare and complete appropriate imaging procedures e. Chair side assistance as directed f. Provide Patient Education as directed by provider or protocol g. Conducts basic first aid and CPR h. Awareness of infection control protocols 2) Administrative Responsibilities: a. Communicate with patients and their families regarding dental needs and concerns b. Schedule appointments for patients and maintain dental/medical records as needed c. Answer phones, properly document messages, and provide information to patients as needed d. Order and maintain dental supplies and other equipment as needed in the dental exam room and clinical site e. Assist Front Office Associates with scheduling patients when needed f. Manage Patient Referrals to specialists or other services when needed or directed g. Manage and process any prior authorization for medications or dental services as needed 3) Communication and Interpersonal Responsibilities: a. Effective verbal and written communication with patients and healthcare professionals b. Active listening and empathy when interacting with patients c. Maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy per HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines d. Collaborating with the healthcare dental and medical team(s), both internal and external stakeholders 4) Performs other duties as assigned a. Effectively carries out tasks and responsibilities beyond core job duties and primary role. The additional duties may vary from time to time and encompass a wide range of activities that contribute to the overall success of the organization (floating, schedule variations, assisting co-workers, patients, visitors, customers, leaders, and other stakeholders in support of the organization.) QUALIFICATIONS: GENERAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 1) Functions effectively in response to workflow or ongoing direction by supervisors 2) Understands and functions in a customer first service capacity 3) Self-motivated 4) Strong initiative- looking for ways to assist the provider without being prompted 5) Knowledge of maintaining EHR (Electronic Health Record) 6) Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others 7) Possesses a basic level of computational and computer skills and mathematical knowledge typically acquired through completion of a high school program or General Educational Development (GED) certificate. PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES 1) Must possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate. 2) Preferred: 1-year practical experience in a dental office 3) Preferred: Community Health Center or FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) experience LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS 1) Required: Successful completion of an accredited Dental Assistant Training Program 2) Required: CPR Certification 3) Required: Valid state Driverxe2x80x99s License 4) Preferred: Automobile insurance with reliable transportation 5) Preferred: Certification Completion as a Registered Dental Assistant TECHNICAL SKILLS 1) Demonstrates necessary proficiency with healthcare electronic clinical systems, including EHR and scheduling systems, in use at the health center. 2) Familiarity with dental and medical terminology, procedures, and pharmacology, including medications used for dental care 3) Proficient with general dental machines and equipment: Standard dental office equipment, autoclave 4) Proficient with typical office equipment: Copier, telephone, Fax 5) Basic Typing skills Mission: To provide evidence-based healthcare utilizing a patient empowered team approach resulting in individual wellness.
