Job Summary: Performs advanced prophylactic and preventive dental procedures in the treatment of patients in order to maximize the dental team’s efficiency and patient care. Job Duties: Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act. Performs supragingial and subgingival scaling, root planning, curretage, and periodontal pocket debridment and coronal polishing when necessary under the supervision of the dentist. Provides individual and group instructions to assist patients in understanding the cause and prevention of dental disease and to motivate patients toward the practice of good oral health. Performs dental radiology including radiographic principle intra oral and extra oral techniques, processing, exposure factors, and radiation safety, sufficient to take, process and mount a variety of x-rays, and to use them as aids in performing dental hygiene treatment and educating patients. Records treatment performed using proper ADA codes, and other necessary information in patient’s file according to the guidelines set by the clinic. Examines the patient’s oral cavity documenting any abnormalities including periodontal pockets in order to aid the dentist in diagnosing and treatment planning. Assists the Dental Clinic Supervisor in providing continued education to all staff regarding oral hygiene issues. Maintains a log of all activities related to educating staff, general public, special groups will be kept. Other duties may be assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Directly supervises 2-7 employees in the Dental Clinic. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Qualifications: EDUCATION REQUIREMENT Must be a graduate from an accredited Dental Hygiene program approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT No additional experience is required. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must be licensed Dental Hygienist from the State of Oklahoma. Must be certified to take intra and extra oral radiographs. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES Any related experience would be advantageous for this position. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of radiation. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
