Dental hygienists are licensed oral health professionals who focus on preventing and treating oral diseases, both to protect teeth and gums and also to protect patientsxe2x80x99 total health. Essential Functions: 1. Greets and seats patients, making them as comfortable as possible 2. Checks every patientxe2x80x99s medical history for alerts, allergies and medications 3. Verifies procedure to be performed with patient; investigates further if a toothache is the chief complaint 4. Prepares proper procedural tray; associated instruments and materials 5. Prepares and maintains dental instruments (sterilize), rooms (sterilize), supplies and equipment 6. Manages patients during dental procedures keeping them comfortable 7. Performs oral health care assessments that include reviewing patientsxe2x80x99 health history, dental charting and oral cancer screening 8. Take dental x-rays and develop them 9. Removes plaque, stain and calculus deposits from above and below the gumline using dental instruments 10. Applies cavity-preventive agents such as fluorides and sealants to the teeth 11. Teaches patients proper oral hygiene techniques to maintain healthy teeth and gums 12. Counsels patients on plaque control and developing individualized at home oral hygiene programs 13. Counsels patients on the importance of good nutrition for maintaining optimal oral health 14. Feels and visually examines gums for sores and signs of disease 15. Charts conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by the dentist 16. Feels lymph nodes under the patientxe2x80x99s chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate presence of oral cancer 17. Examines gums, using probes, to locate periodontal recessed gums and signs of gum disease and educates patient if applicable 18. Removes excess cement from the coronal surfaces of teeth 19. Enters complete and accurate chart notes documenting each patientxe2x80x99s visit 20. Prints out and delivers accurate route slips to front desk for patient check-out 21. Must have a valid and current Dental Hygienist License 2. Must have a current CPR card 3.
